The Federal Defender Leadership Academy (FDLA) is the professional and personal development experience for Federal Defenders.
Over 9 months, members of the inaugural 2025 cohort will further
develop their leadership and management skills so they can lead themselves, their teams, their communities, and the legal profession.
The program, sponsored by the Federal Defender Leadership Center and provided by the lawyer development experts at Apochromatik, includes group and 1:1 coaching, in-person and virtual educational programming, and accountability and support for Federal Defenders.
Applications will open soon for the inaugural 2025 cohort of Defenders ready for this transformational experience. Access application form on or after January 2, 2025.

FDLA
Over the course of 9 months
in 2025, you will:
Learn and Grow as a Lawyer
2 in-person 2 day workshops and 7 90-Minute virtual workshops will help you further develop your leadership and management skills
Participate in Personalized Coaching
Receiving 5 one-on-one sessions (with options for additional coaching) will strengthen your skills and self-awareness
Learn Critical
Management Skills
Learn management skills to be even more successful now and in the future
Take Action
The actionable workshops will give you tools and insights you can apply right away
Network and Collaborate
You'll build connections with your cohort of other Defenders and First Assistants from across the country
What's Included?
- 2 two day, in-person workshops, in Chicago, IL and Denver, CO.
- 7 90 minute workshops on Zoom.
- Five 30 minute, one-on-one coaching sessions via Zoom.
- Support and engagement with your fellow cohort members throughout the program.
- Monthly virtual office hours on a come as needed basis.
- 2 Assessments and debriefs.
